TAKE ACTION AGAINST AUSTRALIAN REFUGEE RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

We, the eX-Detainees at RISE: Refugee Survivors and eX-Detainees launched the Sanction Australia campaign in October 2017. Our primary aim is to sanction Australia from participating in international refugee humanitarian decision making and human rights forums until The End of Mandatory Detention, The End of Refoulement and The End of Refugee Boat Turn back policies. The #SanctionAustralia campaign is distinguished by its unique leadership, in that it is initiated, controlled and directed by eX-detainees from RISE.

It is evident to us that Australia has succeeded in enacting, or providing the world with a blueprint for contemporary modes of border imperialism. Australia’s unrelenting devotion to its politics of deterrence, built on the foundations of White Australia policy, racism and imprisonment demonstrates to us that this country is one that not only allows refugees to be used as political leverage, but applauds its on-going mistreatment of asylum seekers and refugees. There is an extraordinary lack of transparency surrounding detention centres globally, with Australia becoming a well established leader of institutionalised torture and inhumane operations. Our suffering is not happenstance but is in fact the direct manifestation and primary objective of consecutive government’s tough on boats policies.

Refugees have rights and protections enshrined under international law. Indefinite and mandatory detention of refugees in camps where we are subject to trauma and abuse is also unlawful. Australia maintains these camps offshore in order to elude its obligations to international law, and the scrutiny of rights organisations, the media and the public. It should not now elude the scrutiny of the United Nations or anyone that believes in the humanity of refugees.

Seeking asylum is not a crime. Being a refugee is not a crime. But the continued contravention of international law should attract the sanction of the international human rights community.

Sanction Australia is a long term campaign and anyone who supports human rights should join. In order to support Sanction Australia, take these steps:

1. Write a letter based on the attached proforma to all rights groups to call for a Sanction
2. Share our open letter to the rights groups within your networks
3. Share our 10 ex-detainee demands
4. Why Australia needs to be sanctioned
