As eX-detainees, in so-called Australia, we acknowledge that the land we seek protection on is the land of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples whose sovereignty was never ceded. ‘Always was, always will be Aboriginal land’.

For the 12th year running, RISE eX-detainees, the FIRST self-determined advocacy and welfare organisation in “Australia” governed and led by eX-detainees, is making a public statement, supporting the boycott of “Australia Day” aka Invasion day.

On behalf of the eX-detainee community, we continue to acknowledge Sovereignty was never ceded, and we stand in solidarity with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples of “Australia”. We are committed to fighting for justice on the terms set by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and nothing else.

RISE eX-detainee founder said “As eX-detainees in Australia, we firmly believe that First Nation sovereignty and complete autonomy are crucial, as they have set the path for our freedom and the freedom of many other marginalised People of Colour  communities on these lands.”

The crisis of disproportionate numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths and adults being placed in institutionalised “care”, incarcerated and separated from their families and communities is not a recent one. We believe this is systemic abuse which has resulted from over 200 years of discrimination as part of the British colonial genocide strategy.

A RISE eX-detainee director said “the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have constantly voiced their opposition to Australia’s racist refugee policy, demonstrating their increased solidarity with eX-detainees. We uphold our steadfast, solidarity by supporting each other whenever we can, both practically and emotionally.”

In order to prevent ongoing structural discrimination against Indigenous peoples in so called Australia, , RISE eX-detainees call on members of the eX-detainee and refugee community , to refrain from taking part in “Australia Day celebrations.” We urge everyone to show solidarity by at the very least, taking action and denouncing any representatives of our community who participate in “celebrations” on “Australia Day” or any other occasion that denigrates and erases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples by exalting stolenwealth and genocide.

RISE eX-detainees urge members of our community, allies and supporters to amplify and donate where possible to self-determined Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples-led movements and organisations.
